5 things you should NOT do in your LinkedIn messaging
Apr 18, 2025
I received this message from someone and it wasn't effective. Here's why:
1. It's too vague. He should've told me WHY he thinks a partnership would be mutually beneficial.
2. It lacks perspective. Transparently, I don't care if it's "mutually beneficial". I want to know what's in it for ME. I've never met him and he's randomly sending me a message on LinkedIn, so I have no incentive to go out of my way to benefit him.
3. He's asking for a call WAY too soon. Aside from our energy, time is our most valuable asset. So why would I schedule time out of my day for a call when no clear agenda has been provided?
4. The message is a large block of text. Break up blocks of text using line breaks to make it easier on the eyes to read. Short sentences > long sentences.
5. He ends his message with a salutation including his name. People - please think of messaging on LinkedIn like texting - not emailing. You do NOT need to say your name... it's already RIGHT THERE on your profile...
